About this place
Strolling along the Momozono River Green Road leads to the tranquil wooden facade of Momo Garten. Built from a renovated pre-war kominka retaining the understated character of the Showa era, the cafe is bathed in gentle natural light and a calm hush. Guests can browse the titles lining the bookshelves and pass the hours at their own unhurried pace, with outdoor terrace seating offering an equally pleasant retreat during mild weather.
For a substantial lunch, the house curries take center stage with their assertive heat and aromatic depth. The special pork and vegetable spicy curry brings together tender, slow-simmered pork chunks and hearty vegetables in an invigorating sauce, their natural flavors contrasting with the punchy spice blend. A side of pickled onion achar offers a refreshing pause between bites, rounding out the lingering heat.
Those seeking a lighter meal can opt for toasted sandwiches made with naturally leavened bread. Filled with combinations such as ham and crisp lettuce or house-made chicken ham gently prepared at low temperatures to keep it tender and moist, the toasted bread lets the unadorned quality of the ingredients shine.
The baked desserts show equal care and an inventive streak. A standout curiosity is Jocom, a baked treat inspired by the travel rations in Nahoko Uehashi's fantasy novel 'Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit'. Made by baking walnuts, cashews, and oatmeal together with butter and unrefined black sugar, it delivers a rustic, wholesome crunch that releases a rich, nutty fragrance as you chew. The sweets lineup also features a classic cheesecake rich with cream cheese alongside a ripe-banana whole-wheat pound cake, providing comforting accompaniments for afternoon tea.
These sweets pair naturally with a varied drink selection, including the dark-roasted, full-bodied Momo Garten Blend, hot spiced chai, and herbal teas. Note that payment is cash only, so having bills or coins on hand is advisable before settling in.
